The challenge: a five-shop world

SteelFrame Fab sources fabricated structures across nine categories. At the start of 2025, all of it ran through five known partners. Every category depended on the same tiny pool, dual-sourcing was aspirational, and a single shop's capacity crunch rippled through every project at once.

What changed: discovery as a habit, not a project

Rather than a one-time supplier search, the team made discovery a standing habit: every live RFQ also ran a matched discovery pass, and every responsive supplier was folded back into their sourcing graph with capability and last-quote context.

  • Every event adds candidates to the permanent graph
  • Suppliers keep capability, certs, and quote history on their profiles
  • Re-engagement is a click, not a cold restart

Results: 240 suppliers across 9 categories

Six months in, SteelFrame's sourcing graph holds 240 vetted suppliers across nine categories — each with live capability data and event history. Dual-sourcing went from aspiration to default. The second event in any category now starts from accumulated context instead of a blank sheet.

What to copy

Treat discovery as compounding: the value is not in any single search but in the graph it leaves behind. Run a discovery pass beside every live RFQ — the event pays for itself, and the graph keeps paying after it closes.
